Francis Bacon Painting Realises £21.3 million at Christie’s London

CHRISTIE’S LONDON EVENING AUCTION OF POST-WAR & CONTEMPORARY ART

TOTALS £80.6 MILLION/ $126.5 MILLION / €96.1 MILLIONFrancis Bacon’s Portrait of Henrietta Moraes realises £21.3 million

International Buying brings Strong Results

Three lots sold above £5 million / 16 lots sold above £1 million

Record prices established for Wool, de Bruyckere, Houseago

London - Christie’s evening auction of Post-War & Contemporary Art totaled £80,576,100 ($126,504,477 / €96,127,287) selling 95 percent by value and 89 percent by lot. This is the second highest total for the category at Christie’s London. The top lot of
the sale was Francis Bacon’s Portrait of Henrietta Moraes which sold for £21.3 million.

Combined with Post-War & Contemporary art offered from Living
With Art: A Private European Collection
on 9th and 10th February,
sales in the category this month have realised £96.6 million to date.

Francis Outred, Christie’s Head of Post-War & Contemporary Art, Europe commented: “I am thrilled with the outstanding results of our evening auction of Post-War & Contemporary Art, the second highest total in these rooms for the category, only surpassed by the June 2008 auction at the height of the market (£ 86.2 million). Following the exceptional success of the Henry Moore last week, the best of British was completed by the Francis Bacon, ‘Portrait of Henrietta Moraes’ which achieved over 20 million pounds. Having had only two owners in its near 50 year history, the work had not been on the open market before and had not been seen in public for almost twenty years. As a result it created a fierce battle of six telephone bidders to achieve its
over-estimate price.”

Encouraging Growth with Continued Demand across Geographies and Categories

Christie’s LIVE drew 25 increase in bids / 29 percent of all bidders transact online

London - Christie’s announces 2011 sales of £3.6 billion / $5.7 billion, up nine percent by £ (14 percent by $) compared with 2010 (figures include buyer’s premium). This includes private sales of £502 million / $808.6 million, an increase of 44 percent by £ (50 percent by $) on 2010.
“Christie’s ability to curate and offer sales of art to a growing audience has led to
continued demand across geographies, collecting categories and at all levels.
This is a very encouraging set of results,” said Steven P. Murphy, Chief
Executive Officer, Christie’s. “While we are seeing more investors
collecting, there are many more collectors who are increasing their investment
in their collections as the explosion of interest in art, fuelled by
globalization, facilitated by the technology that increases access to
information and images, meets the art that is coming to the market.”

Post-War and Contemporary led the art categories with auction sales of £735.7 million / $1.2 billion – an increase of 22 percent by £ (27 percent by $). The second
strongest category was Asian Art which increased 13 percent by £ (17 percent by

Pure Powder Pleasure to Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Storm Delivers Feet of Pure Powder Pleasure
to Jackson Hole, Wyoming
~
Forecast is calling for 60″ by Saturday.

How great it is to see the reaction to snow in a ski resort like Jackson Hole. There are no school snow days here, just “powder” sick days. The road crews are chased down by
drivers heading to the ski area, nobody bothers to clear the sidewalks, the
mountain is Mecca. In a season that has drawn headlines of droughts in
December, Jackson Hole has been lucky with more than 10 feet of snowfall before
this storm and now the faucet has opened full throttle. While snow may slow the
crowds of Sundance, nothing will stop the race to get to the powder here.

Legendary Elizabeth Taylor Auction Results

THE NEW YORK SALES SERIES DEVOTED TO THE COLLECTION OF
ELIZABETH TAYLOR
ACHIEVES $156.8 MILLION / €120.7 MILLION

MOST VALUABLE SALE OF JEWELRY IN AUCTION HISTORY

MOST VALUABLE PRIVATE COLLECTION OF FASHION EVER SOLD AT AUCTION

CHRISTIE’S FIRST EVER ONLINE-ONLY AUCTION – CONDUCTED IN PARALLEL TO LIVE AUCTIONS – FETCHES OVER $9.5 MILLION

26 ITEMS SELL FOR OVER $1 MILLION; 6 ITEMS FOR OVER $5 MILLION

New York – The landmark auctions of The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor at Christie’s New York from December 3-17 realized a combined total of $156,756,576 (£100,324,209/ €120,702,563) with every single item sold. The sale drew unprecedented interest from bidders throughout the world, with 36 different countries represented during the four days of live auctions. Christie’s flagship Rockefeller Center saleroom was abuzz with people competing in person, on the phone, on-line and by absentee bid to win one of the Collection’s 1,778 lots of jewelry, fashion, decorative
arts and film memorabilia. The total far exceeded Christie’s pre-sale
expectations for the sale as a whole and for individual items, which were
frequently hammered down for five, ten, or even 50 times their estimate.

Steven P. Murphy, Chief Executive Officer, Christie’s International, commented, “The exhibition and sales of The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor in New York have been the crowning achievement to a very strong year at Christie’s. The success of these sales, with bidders participating from all over the world, demonstrated not only a recognition of
the taste and style of Miss Taylor, but also the convening power of
Christie’s.”

This historic sale set a world record for the most valuable sale of jewelry in auction history, and set a new bar for the most valuable collection of fashion ever offered at auction. It also marked the company’s first-ever Online-Only sale, which ran in parallel to the live auctions at Christie’s New York and generated over 57,000 bids and $9.5 million in additional sales. In total, 26 items sold for over the $1 million mark, and
numerous new world auction records were achieved – a testament to Miss Taylor’s
expert eye for craftsmanship, rarity, and quality in all of the items she chose
for her personal collection.

During this four-day event that captured headlines worldwide, record numbers of
auction attendees were exposed to the Christie’s International Real Estate Bespoke
Marketing Program through the prominent exhibit of property brochures on
display in the lobby.
